The Lancet Respiratory Medicine published a three-paper Series examining prematurity-associated lung disease and its phenotypes, respiratory trajectories across the life course, and approaches to management from infancy through adulthood.
Although recruitment to the original childhood study is complete, RHiNO continues to investigate how lung-function phenotypes change with growth and what they may mean for respiratory health in adolescence and adult life.
The RHiNO randomised clinical trial showed that combined inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting β2-agonist treatment produced a clinically important improvement in lung function in selected preterm-born children with reduced lung function.
The original RHiNO study completed recruitment and study visits in November 2019. In total, 767 children underwent RHiNO assessments, including 565 born preterm and 202 term-born comparison participants.
RHiNO began detailed childhood respiratory assessments to understand symptoms, lung function, physiology and mechanisms after preterm birth.
